Obituary

Sophie Wilcheck Weyers died peacefully at home in Mount Dora, Florida on July 7, 2023. She was 101.

Sophie was born April 3, 1922 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. She was the eighth child, and sixth daughter, of Kaspar and Anna Wilczak (Wilcheck).

As the youngest child in a big Catholic family and a product of Catholic schools, Sophie had a strong Christian faith. She was a good student and often shared stories about the nuns from her school days. Sophie graduated in 1940 from Clark High School in Carnegie, Pennsylvania where she met her future husband, Lawrence Weyers, Jr. She worked as a secretary at MGM before becoming a mother and a consummate homemaker. Her four children gave her a run for her money by lighting fields on fire, pulling the braces off their teeth with pliers, and hiding the pendulum of her beloved grandfather clock. Despite their chaos, she provided unwavering love and support while keeping an immaculate house with everything organized and in its place.

In 1960, Sophie and Lawrence moved to Longwood, Florida to buy a trailer park that Sophie managed for over 20 years, using her business sense and ability to connect with people. Lawrence enjoyed owning/operating his trucking business in Florida (no snow!). He passed away in 1978 and Sophie remained a widow for 45 years, turning down multiple marriage proposals because she said Lawrence was the only one for her. Sophie learned to drive in her 30s and loved to "run around" until she stopped driving during her last decade, one of her greatest regrets.

Sophie loved time with her grandchildren, reading (especially Reader's Digest and Prevention magazines), traveling, shopping, and socializing with her many friends at Casselberry Community Church and in the Purple Hat Society. She was an avid Bingo player and enjoyed playing cards. Diamond was her birthstone, and she loved beautiful jewelry. Her potato pancakes and fried chicken were unforgettable, and she hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas gatherings for decades. She made pies and Christmas cookies for her family until she could no longer lift the pan out of the oven. She never said good-bye without slipping her grandchildren (and great-grandchildren) some money. Sophie's family is grateful they had 101 years with her…. and she never took that time for granted. She started saying "at my age, you don't buy green bananas" decades ago!

Sophie is survived by her four children, Barbara Williams (Dennis), Lawrence Weyers III, Keith Weyers (Lisa), and Gary Weyers, as well as six grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.

Her children want to thank Dania Garcia for her compassionate and loving care of their mother over the last year of her life.

A memorial service will take place at 11 a.m. on July 15th at Woodlawn Funeral Home and Memorial Park, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha , Florida. Donations can be made in Sophie's memory to United Women in Faith, Church Center for the United Nations, 777 United Nations Plaza, 11th Floor, New York, NY 10017.
