Obituary

Spencer Middlecoff of Cape Coral, Florida, passed away on January 12, 2024, in Fort Myers, Florida.

He was born January 24, 1939, in Alton, Illinois, the son of Lester C. Middlecoff and Dorothy M. (Hausman) Middlecoff.  He graduated from Alton High School in 1957.

Spencer worked as a machinist at Owen Glass Company, in Alton and later at Armstrong Mold in Winchester, Indiana. He completed his apprenticeship and received his Tool & Die/Machinist certification from Owen Glass Company. He also owned Shorty's Delta Queen, with his wife Ella, where he performed "magic" for his customers in Muncie, Indiana.

He was a member of the Gulf Coast Church of Christ, Fort Myers, Florida.  Spencer was an avid sportsman, enjoying basketball, baseball, archery, and shuffleboard. He received many awards for his sports interests.  The award he enjoyed sharing the most was recounting the State Championship with his high school basketball team in 1957.

For a tall guy (6'8") he was very agile and quite a great dancer.  He and Ella liked dancing the Polka, Waltzing, and the Jitterbug; but his favorite seemed to be the Cha-Cha. He enjoyed woodcarving, playing cards, and fishing. His at-home fish fries were second to none, along with his famous chili from the Delta Queen.

He loved sharing his "Pride & Joy" along with many stories and jokes. He focused largely on putting a smile on the face of most anyone he encountered.

Spencer was preceded in death by Lester C. Middlecoff (father), Dorothy M. Stevens (mother), and his wife of nearly forty years Ella (Barlow) Middlecoff.

Survivors include his children, Laura Walton (Darryl) and Mark Middlecoff; Ella's children, Thomas TJ Mahoney (Sonja), Joella Squires (Jon) and Janis McAdam (Brian); grandchildren, Nicholas Weherley (Milli), Natalie Decker, Chancelor Mahoney, Kristen Goodwin (Cody), Summer Johnson, Ashton Brown (Leigh), Ryan Squires (Heather), Nicholas Squires, and Colin McAdam; eleven great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

Services will be held on Saturday, February 3, 2024 , at 2:00 p.m. at Gulf Coast Church of Christ in Fort Myers, Florida.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Gulf Coast Church of Christ, 9550 Six Mile Cypress Pkwy, Fort Myers, Florida 33966.
