Sue Ann Bailey, a journalist who became a communications manager at IBM, died peacefully at her home in Venice, Fla. on May 28. She was 86. Graduating from Mamaroneck High School in 1957, she attended Bethany College in West Virginia as well as the University of Missouri School of Journalism in Columbia, while raising two daughters with her then-husband, Richard H. Bailey. While living in Phoenix, AZ, she earned a degree in journalism from Arizona State University in 1972. She taught journalism at ASU and worked as a copy editor at the Arizona Republic.
Sue Ann joined IBM in 1976 as a communications manager and handled major product announcements. She said her most interesting assignment was managing press relations for the IBM art gallery at their former headquarters at 590 Madison Ave, New York City.
Sue Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Esther Levy and Howard Browne. She is survived by her daughters, Laura Bailey (Jonathan James) and Cynthia Bailey Pratt (Stephen L. Pratt), as well as two granddaughters, Bettie Marlowe and Caroline Bailey James, and one great-granddaughter, Evelyn Marlowe. She is also survived by her partner of many years, Alan J. Macher. Sue Ann enjoyed travel, taking innumerable cruises, as well as trips in Asia and Europe. She also relished beating the average in the NY Times daily Wordle puzzle; reading mysteries and playing mahjong. But her real passion was raising, training and showing dogs, primarily Shetland sheep dogs, her favorite breed. She frequently taught obedience classes at local AKC dog clubs.
Long retired, Sue Ann’s love for dogs never faded. Often the doorbell rang. “Is Sue Ann home? I need some training advice.” Sue Ann invariably fixed the problem, often remarking that it was more difficult to train the owner than to train the dog.
