Thomas L. “Tom” Griffis, 79, passed away peacefully at his home in Ocala, Florida, on September 8, 2026. He was born on September 21, 1946, in Norwich, New York.

Tom was a very successful serial entrepreneur who began his journey at an early age. At just 10 years old, he was shoveling sidewalks and mowing lawns, developing the strong work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit that would remain with him throughout his life. By his late twenties, Tom had achieved financial independence.

Throughout his career, Tom owned five businesses and employed as many as 77 people. Of all his ventures, his favorite was the Pennysaver, where his dedication and excellence earned more than 130 state and national awards. Among his many accomplishments, the Pennysaver was named “Best Weekly” in New York six times over a 20-year period. Tom was also widely recognized for his exceptional financial knowledge and analytical mind within the newspaper industry.

Tom had a wonderful sense of humor and was known for his intelligence, curiosity, and analytical nature. He enjoyed researching a wide variety of subjects and was always willing to share his knowledge and good fortune with others. Over the years, he helped numerous family members and friends navigate difficult situations and was someone they could depend upon.

Above all, Tom enjoyed the life he had built and treasured the many happy and special moments he shared with his family and his three beloved dogs. He leaves behind a lifetime of memories that will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.

Tom is survived by his children, Darlene Rhodes of California, Denise Emmick of New York, and Stephanie Chapman of California; and their mother and his former wife, Donna Davison-Loughren. He is also survived by his four grandchildren, Ashlee Gould, Connor Hunt, Zoe Colaso, and Austin Chapman; four great-grandchildren, Hayden Gould, Lennon Gould, Waylon James, and Lyla Jane; his sister, Gail Annese of Norwich; and several nieces and nephews.

Each of those who knew Tom carries their own memories of the years they shared with him. With the passage of time, those moments have become an important part of their family’s history and will remain woven into the lives and memories of all those he leaves behind.

Tom was preceded in death by his mother, Leonora Griffis, and his sister, Pat St. Denny.

No formal funeral services will be held. A Celebration of Life will take place on October 3, 2026.
