Virgil Eugene
Carr
August 18, 1931 – February 2, 2022
Virgil Eugene Carr, 90, long time resident of Lakeland, FL, most recently of Daytona Beach, FL, passed from this earthly life peacefully at his home with hospice care and family at his side.
Virgil was born August 18, 1931, in Canton, OH, the second of three sons to Goldie (Rodgers) and Harry Carr. He followed his family commitment and enlisted in military service, serving in the Army, stationed in Germany from 1952-1954.
Virgil was a kind, generous man, an active advocate of civil rights and racial justice. He loved and was loved by many. A genuine interest and concern for people drove his career. After graduating from Anderson University, Anderson, IN, he pastored in the Church of God in Cornell, WI, Milwaukee WI, and Denver, CO. He received a master's degree in clinical psychology from the University of WI, Milwaukee which brought him to Florida, where he worked in the mental health and addictions treatment fields. Many were touched by his compassionate guidance.
Virgil was a life-long sports fan and athlete. He played tennis almost daily and later, golf. He humbly appreciated the accolades that came with a hole-in-one. His volunteer work included playing violin for nursing home patients and having great conversations with VA patients.
Virgil was preceded in death by his parents, both siblings, Harold Carr, and Dale Carr, and sadly his youngest son, Jay Carr in 1981. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joan Gille Carr, four children, Nikki (McKinney), Jami (Smith), Kip Carr, and Ty Carr, and his stepson, James Russell, ten grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be Saturday, February 26, 2022, at 2:00 PM at Beacon Hill Fellowship, 220 W Beacon Rd, Lakeland, FL 33803, 863-712-2416. Donations may be made in his honor to his favorite charity at Lakeland Habitat for Humanity .
