IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Walter Kenneth
"Ken" Smith, Jr.
September 13, 1948 – May 6, 2025
Walter Kenneth Smith Jr., known to most as Ken, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, at the age of 76.
Born in Fresno, California, Ken lived a life marked by service, intellect, and quiet strength.
A proud U.S. Air Force veteran, Ken served as a cryptographic technician during the Vietnam War and later supported NATO operations in Europe as a civilian communications expert. His decades-long career in telecommunications took him around the world, working with companies such as North Electric, ITT, and Siemens.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Dianne Smith; his son, Bradley Scott Smith, and daughter-in-law, Shana Smith; grandchildren Kyle Smith and Summer Smith; nephew's Dwayne Nyberg and Chris Nyberg, great nephew, Johnny Nyberg; stepchildren Greg Martin (Catherine), Julie Efferson, Melissa Acker, Noah Martin (Christina), Krissy Schlinski; and 10 wonderful grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter Kenneth Smith Sr. and Clella LoDema Smith (Gardner), as well as his sister, Clella LoDelle Nyberg (Smith).
Ken will be remembered for his sharp mind, dry humor, and deep devotion to those he loved. His thirst for knowledge and adventure led him all over the world. He loved to travel and explore new cultures and customs, always returning to his favorite place – Germany. He lived there for extended periods throughout his life, and the friends he made there always remained in his thoughts.
Ken also had a passion for trivia. He eventually helped run local trivia nights and spent countless hours each week crafting challenging questions to stump competitors. The mark he left on so many lives will never be forgotten.
A private memorial and Celebration of Life will be held at a date to be determined. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the American Cancer Society . Arrangements entrusted with BALDWIN BROTHERS Funeral & Cremation Society-Spanish Springs, 352-430-1449. Sentiments are encouraged at www.baldwincremation.com .
