Obituary

Dr. Walter Leigh Workman, originally from Pineknob, Raleigh County, West Virginia, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and friends on June 12 th , 2025.

Walter was born on April 14 th , 1937 to William J. and Bertha A. Workman (Morris).  He graduated from Marsh Fork High School, as valedictorian, and West Virginia Tech where he earned a degree in Chemical Engineering.  It was while studying in Montgomery he met the love of his life Patricia (Skaggs) to whom he was a devoted husband for 65 years.  As newlyweds they moved to Cleveland where Walter pursued a doctorate degree in Chemical Engineering at the Case Institute of Technology.  Upon completion they moved to South Charleston, WV and Walter embarked upon a lifetime career with Union Carbide.  He and the family lived in Charleston as well as Lansing, IL; Texas City, TX; London, England; Ponce, Puerto Rico; and Basking Ridge, NJ.  Walter and Patricia retired to The Villages, FL.

Walter had an accomplished career with Union Carbide and was a Registered Professional Engineer in the state of West Virginia.  He left his mark on plastic making technology and was part of a team that won the Kirkpatrick Chemical Engineering Achievement Award in 1977.  He also was awarded the Union Carbide Engineering Excellence award in 1993-1994.

Walter enjoyed church life and was an elder at the Liberty Corner Presbyterian Church. He and Patricia loved dancing, they participated in a square dancing group and were enthusiastic members of the Latin Dance Club in Charleston where he served as president and treasurer.  His mastery of the Macarena was fun to see at family occasions and town squares in The Villages.  Walter enjoyed playing golf, he played in golf leagues at work and with his sons and brothers in law Harold (Nancy) Skaggs and Dale (Marilyn) Jenkins. As Villagers, Walter and Pat very much enjoyed meeting up at Panera with dear friends on Saturday mornings. Above all, Walter relished his role as a dedicated family man and loved sending time with his wife and their relatives, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Walter was a talented carpenter and mechanic, using skills he learned from his father, and was good at solving problems of all kinds and great at fixing things around the house.  He was a true gentleman; a pleasant, cheerful, kind and patient man to all who knew him.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents and sister Barbara (Al) Smith.  He is survived by his wife Patricia, brother William R. (Amy), sons John and David, grandchildren Erica (Tyler) Gallagher, Bailey, Jack, Quinn, Molly and Annabelle and great grandchildren Avonlea, Gwendolyn, Phinehas, Marigold and Evangeline.
