IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William
Ellington
October 29, 1930 – May 17, 2025
William Earl "Duke" Ellington, 94, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2025. Born on October 29, 1930, in Macon, Georgia, Duke grew up with a strong sense of independence and resilience that shaped his character from an early age. His early years instilled in him a deep appreciation for family, education, and the simple joys of life—sports, music, and his wife's cooking. Duke served his country with honor in the United States Coast Guard during the Korean War, from 1951 until his honorable discharge in 1960. During his service, he was awarded both the National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. Following his military service, Duke pursued his education with dedication, earning a bachelor's degree in Business from Florida State University and furthering his studies in Accounting at the University of Florida. On June 22, 1958, Duke married the love of his life, Mable Claire Doke. Through all of life's ups and downs, they built a life together marked by loving dedication, faith, and a strong commitment to family. He was a devoted father to his two daughters, Sabrina Ellington Hulse and Julie Ellington, and a proud grandfather to Olivia Hulse and William Hulse. Duke enjoyed music, Elvis Presley in particular, and was an avid sports fan, especially his Florida State Seminoles. He stayed active well into his 70s and loved biking and boogie boarding with his grandchildren at the beach. Even though Duke lost most of his eyesight 15 years ago, his patient attitude, remarkable spirit, and determination meant it never stopped him from living life to the fullest. Duke died on May 17, 2025, slipping peacefully into the arms of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. He is preceded in death by his mother, Nina Stecher, his sister, Joanne Scott, and his son-in-law, Bruce Hulse. He is survived by his loving wife of nearly 67 years, Mable Claire; his daughters, Sabrina and Julie; his grandchildren, Olivia and William; and a host of extended family and friends who will miss his generous spirit and steady presence. A Celebration of Life service will be held on May 30, 2025, at 3:30 p.m. at Tangerine Community Church, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the American Foundation for the Blind (afb.org), a national organization dedicated to expanding possibilities for people with vision loss and honoring Duke's patient perseverance through his own eyesight challenges. Alternatively, donations may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital (stjude.org). Duke's life was a quiet testament to love, loyalty, and kindness. His legacy lives on in the family he cherished and the many lives he touched.
