William Eugene "Gene" Hays

We bid a heartfelt farewell to William Eugene "Gene" Hays, Jr. who passed away with family by his side on July 10 at his home in Winter Park, FL. Born August 13, 1936, in Pasadena, CA, Gene's life spanned time in California, Massachusetts, France, The Netherlands, Florida, and New Hampshire. He remained an active alum of Vermont Academy and St. Lawrence University, both of which he held close to his heart. A consummate gentleman, Gene will be remembered as a spirited, generous, and charming soul, with an affinity for jazz music and elevated tastes. He was the perfect host and bartender, impeccable dresser and devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, and friend. He was savvy in business, forming close relationships that lasted a lifetime. He is survived by his wife Carla, daughters Lori Kalinowski (David), Elyse Brown (Stanford), Marly Dombrower (Robert); grandson Levi Dombrower; and nephew Eric Betts (Laura). He is predeceased by his first wife, Sieglinde; sister Marilyn Betts; and nephew Jon Betts. A Celebration of Life will be held at a date/venue to be determined Fall 2023.
