With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of William (Bill) Edward Payne, who lived a long and full life and peacefully departed this world on August 8, 2026, at the age of 96 in Ormond Beach, Florida.

Born on January 28, 1930, to James Manly and Lelia Sally (Colvin) Payne, Bill graced this earth with a presence that was both gentle and enduring, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and cherished memories.

Bill’s journey began in rural Jasper, Alabama. At a young age, his family relocated to the quaint town of Boston, Georgia, where he was educated and nurtured by the warmth of southern ways, a loving Mama, and adventurous siblings and friends.

Though he spent the majority of his adult life in the Philadelphia suburbs, his heart forever remained tied to the simplicity and charm of his roots in the South. His life was woven with tales of hard work, service, dedication, and commitment to family and community.

In 1948 as a young man, Bill answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Navy. He served with honor and distinction through the Korean War until 1954, embodying the values of courage and resilience. His time in the Navy instilled in him a sense of duty and camaraderie that he carried throughout his life.

After his military service, Bill embarked on a 35-year career with Wyeth Pharmaceuticals in Radnor, PA. Starting as a Stationary Engineer, he rose through the ranks to retire as Supervisor of Building Services in 1994. His colleagues knew him as friendly, dependable, and hardworking—a man who took pride in a job well done and was always willing to lend a hand.

In his younger years Bill was an active participant in Visitation BVM parish, where he found joy in attending men’s clubs and volunteering with youth activities. His community involvement reflected his belief in the importance of lending a hand when called upon.

A man of many talents and interests, Bill was an avid shade-tree mechanic and tinkerer, with a particular fondness for classic cars, especially Ford Mustangs. His talent for woodworking showcased his creativity and skill, crafting items that would become treasured family heirlooms. Upon retirement, he embraced the open road with an RV, exploring the landscapes of the United States, a testament to his curious and adventurous spirit.

Bill was predeceased by his wife, Angeline (Rizzuto), and his siblings, Edith, Frances, Pauline, Joann, Tom, and Roy. He is survived by two children, daughter Patricia (Patti) and son William (Bill), cherished grandchildren Vanessa (Ness), Jeffrey (Jeff), and William (Billy), along with his eight great-grandchildren, Annissa, Maxfield, Royal, Jayden, Connor, Logan, Hunter, and Nolan, who were his legacy; their healthy and happy lives brought him joy.

He also leaves behind his honorary daughter, Shari Bentzel, who held a special place in his heart as his “angel.” His care, love, and friendship extended to his brother-in-law, Joe Morina, and friends acquired in his last years in Florida, especially Shirley Williams.

Known for his pleasant smile and love of laughter, Bill had a gift for storytelling and a knack for brightening the days of those around him. His warmth and humor will be remembered fondly by those fortunate to know him. With an exceptionally sharp memory, Bill shared past experiences and enjoyed hearing the stories of others.

As we bid farewell to this dear man, we celebrate a life rich in love and laughter, a journey marked by kindness. Though he is no longer with us, his spirit will forever be a guiding light, reminding us to cherish each moment.

Rest in peace, Bill, Dad, PopPop, knowing that your memory will endure in the hearts of those who loved you.
