IN LOVING MEMORY OF
William M.
Reid Jr.
January 13, 1931 – July 22, 2025
Dr. William M. "Bill" Reid Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, surgeon, and gardener, passed away peacefully July 22, 2025, in Palm Coast, Florida, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on January 13, 1931, in Waterbury, Connecticut, to William Mitchell Reid Sr. and Louise Marvin Reid.
Bill's academic journey led him to Cornell University Medical School, where he studied from 1952 to 1956. He completed his residency at St. Luke's Hospital from 1959 to 1963. Between 1957 and 1959, he served as a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps, exemplifying both patriotism and dedication to healing.
In 1964, Dr. Reid began a distinguished private practice in general surgery in Alexandria, Virginia, where he served his community with skill and compassion until his retirement in 1998. He was deeply respected by patients and colleagues alike for his expertise, humility, and care. Upon his retirement, he was profoundly moved by the outpouring of love and respect from those whose lives he had touched.
An accomplished surgeon, Bill was proud of his contributions to medical literature, including a publication in the *Archives of Surgery* (Vol. 84: 34–40, Jan. 1962) on the use of fibrinolysin in resolving localized thrombosis.
After retiring, Bill found great joy in tending to his garden and cultivating a small vineyard, sharing homemade wine with friends and neighbors. He also kept bees and delighted in making honey. Though he once enjoyed playing golf, he gracefully gave up the sport after undergoing hip replacement surgery.
Bill is survived by his devoted wife, Leila, his son Steve, his daughter Janet, and his three cherished granddaughters. He is also survived by his brother Robert (Elaine), and 4 nephews.
Bill's life was marked by a steadfast dedication to healing, a generous spirit, and a quiet humility. He will be remembered with love and gratitude by all who had the privilege to know him.
