William Ralph Sams Jr., known to family and friends as Ralph, 77, of Sarasota, Florida, passed away peacefully on July 6, 2026, surrounded by the love of his wife and daughter.

Born on August 29, 1948, in New London, Connecticut, Ralph was the son of the late William Ralph Sams Sr. and Shirley Pritchett Sams. He proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1969 to 1974. During his military service, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with Bronze Star, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (Korea), and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

After moving to Florida in 1982, Ralph built a career in golf course construction, helping create and shape courses throughout the southeast. In 1983, while living in Sarasota, he met Judy Ellis, the love of his life. They were married on December 9, 1985, and together shared more than 42 years of love, partnership, and laughter. They welcomed their daughter, Jennifer, in 1988, who remained one of Ralph's greatest joys.

Ralph found happiness in life's simple pleasures. He loved playing golf, tending his garden, riding his motorcycle, and challenging himself with crossword puzzles and other games. He was known for his quick wit and wonderful sense of humor, always ready with a clever remark that could make those around him smile. Whether working outdoors or spending time with family, Ralph appreciated the moments that brought laughter, peace, and togetherness.

Above all, Ralph will be remembered as a devoted husband, a loving father, and a man of quiet strength, unwavering integrity, and a kind heart. His steady presence, dependable nature, sharp wit, and deep love for his family left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him. He will be profoundly missed and lovingly remembered.

Ralph was preceded in death by his parents, William Ralph Sams Sr. and Shirley Pritchett Sams, and by his sister, Robin Sams.

He is survived by his beloved wife of more than 42 years, Judy Sams; his daughter, Jennifer Sams Scott, and her husband, Matthew Scott; his sister, Carol Barrett, and her husband, Richard Barrett; his brother, Scott Sams; his nephew, Michael Barrett; and many extended family members and dear friends who will cherish his memory.

The family will honor Ralph's life with a private celebration.
