Wm. Dallas Steele's Obituary

Steele, William Dallas, 92, beloved father and grandfather, died peacefully at his Ponce Inlet home on March 30, 2010.  Born in Rock Hill, SC, November 11, 1917, he moved to the Daytona area in 1925.  He graduated from Mainland High School (1935) and began a construction career with his father, George Steele, building homes and much of old downtown Daytona.  He served in the US Navy during World War II, stationed in the north Atlantic, the Philippines, and Jacksonville, FL, where he managed the construction of numerous barracks at the Naval Station in Mayport.  Post WW II, Dallas designed and constructed homes in the San Francisco Bay area.  In 1956, he formed Steele Construction Company in Daytona Beach, specializing in custom designed and constructed homes, apartments, and office buildings. Proudly, many of these buildings still exist throughout the community.  After a 40 year career, he enjoyed retirement between Highlands, NC, and Ponce Inlet.  A consummate outdoorsman, Dallas enjoyed deep sea fishing, celestial navigation, and hunting.  He was predeceased by wife, Irene VanWie Steele.  Dallas is survived by loving daughters Lori (Charlie) Chmielewski; Lisa (Stuart) Sixma; grandson Craig (DeeDee & Garrett Chesnutt) Chmielewski, Atlanta, GA; granddaughters Jennifer (James) DuBois, Atlanta, GA; Lauren Sixma and Melissa Sixma, Ponce Inlet, FL.  He is survived by nieces Ruth Van Seeter, Ormond Beach, FL; Bobbie Jean Jessup, CA; and Mary Gaines, NC; cousin Jake Barnhardt, Hayesville, NC.  The family deeply appreciates the special Hospice angels and the support of loving caregivers.  A private family service will be held at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Marine Science Center, 100 Lighthouse Drive, Ponce Inlet, FL., 32127, or to Hospice of Volusia/Flagler, 3800 Woodbriar Trail, Port Orange, FL, 32129.
