Zygmunt Mell of Daytona Beach, Florida passed away on May 24, 2023 with his loving family by his side. Zyg was born on November 22, 1924 in Detroit, Michigan to parents Louis and Catherine Malinowski. Zyg is preceded in death by his father Louis, his mother Catherine, his first wife Dolores, his second wife Shirley and his two older brothers, Louie and Albin. Zyg and Albin legally changed their last names to Mell. After graduating from high school at St. Ladislaus in Detroit, he enlisted in the Army and served as a medic during WWII and participated in the D-Day invasion and the Battle of the Bulge. Left to cherish his memory is his son Tim (Lynne), daughter Karen (Steve), two granddaughters, Dena (Brad) and Keri (Jeff); and four great grandchildren; Emme, Sylas, Kinley, and Charlotte. Zyg was a member of Our Lady of Hope Knights of Columbus Council 8086 in Port Orange and the VFW post 3282 in Port Orange. Zyg always had a smile on his face and was loved by many. The family referred to him as Papa Ziggy. A funeral mass will be held on June 29, 2023 at Our Lady of Hope Church, Port Orange at 8:30am. There will be a reception in the church hall after mass.
